4 Winter Drinks to Warm You From the Inside Out

Here in London, the temperature outside has a special ability to feel significantly colder than it actually is -- and it's a cold that sticks with you. All. Winter. Long.

We're talking always-feeling-damp, bone-chilling kind of cold. Blankets and sweaters can help you recover once you're safely indoors, but sometimes the best way to warm up is from the inside out. Our favorite way to do that? With some of these warming, comforting drinks.

They're easy to whip up at home using ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen, and they're a great way to inject a little Hygge into your daily routine. I mean, honestly -- is there anything better than cuddling up on the sofa with blankets, loved ones, and a warm mug in your hands?

Enough explaining... let's get into the recipes!

Golden Turmeric Milk

Golden milk has been used in Ayurveda for centuries to treat fatigue, digestive issues, and joint pain. It's the perfect combo of warming, creamy, and nourishing -- and it's the perfect drink to wind down with after a long day.

  • 1 cup of coconut milk

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk

  • 1/2 TBSP coconut oil

  • 1 tsp. ground turmeric

  • 1/4 tsp. ground ginger

  • 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon

  • 1 TBSP. maple syrup

  • Pinch of black pepper

How to make it:

Add all ingredients to a small pot over medium heat, and whisk to combine. Serve in your favorite mug, top with a sprinkle of cinnamon, and enjoy!

Note: We know it may seem a little odd to be adding coconut oil to warm milk, but don't leave it out--turmeric's primary compound, curcumin, has loads of health benefits but is fat-soluble, so having a little fat in this recipe makes it more bioavailable (meaning your body can utilize it more easily).

Clean Pumpkin Spice Latte

This isn't you're Starbucks PSL which will leave you with a major sugar hangover in an hour. Spicy, creamy, and a little sweet but with none of the guilt... you won't need to shell out $5 for a latte again!

  • 1 cup milk (or non-dairy milk of your choice)

  • 1/4 cup strongly brewed coffee

  • 2-3 TBSP pumpkin purée

  • 1/2 TBSP maple syrup

  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 tsp. ground ginger

  • 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg

  • Pinch allspice

How to make it:

Brew a small amount of strong coffee. Add the remaining ingredients to a small pot over medium heat, whisking thoroughly. Pour your desired amount of coffee into a mug and top with pumpkin spiced milk. Sprinkle with cinnamon and enjoy!

Healthy Hot Chocolate

This is basically the grown-up version of the Swiss Miss cocoa of your childhood. Vanilla and cinnamon bring out the richness of the chocolate, and maca powder offers hormone-balancing benefits. Delicious and nutritious.

  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 2 cups milk (or non-dairy milk of your choice)

  • 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon

  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

  • 1 tsp. maca powder*

  • 1 pinch sea salt

  • 2 TBSP maple syrup or agave

How to make it:

Add all ingredients to a small pot over medium heat, whisk until combined, and pour into your favorite mug. Feeling fancy? Top with this healthy whipped cream.

*Keep in mind there is limited research on the safety of maca powder in pregnancy and while breastfeeding due to its influence on hormones. The good news is if you choose to leave out the maca powder your cocoa will still be incredibly delicious.

Warming Chai Latte

Ok, ok, we know there are plenty of chai mixes and syrups available, but hear us out: the real deal only takes 15 minutes to make, and it's so worth the effort!

  • 2 cups of water

  • 1 cup milk (or non-dairy milk of your choice)

  • 2-3 black tea bags

  • 1 tsp. cinnamon

  • 1/2 tsp. ground ginger

  • 1/2 tsp. cardamom

  • 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg

  • 2 TBSP maple syrup

  • 2 slices orange peel

How to make it:

  1. Place spices and orange peel and water in a pot and bring to a boil. Lower heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Add maple syrup and tea bags, and steep for 5 minutes.

  2. Remove tea bags and pour through a fine-mesh strainer. Reserve 1/2 a cup for a latte, and store the rest in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

  3. Warm milk over medium heat (to make a really creamy latte, froth with a milk frother!)

  4. Combine chai concentrate and milk in a mug, top with a sprinkle of cinnamon, and enjoy!
